We began our program in Santiago Atitlán in 1997 after the signing of the Peace Accords ending Guatemala's 36 year civil war.
Students who were part of that program work now with the Human Rights Commission and are studying law and journalism at the University. We have added a second layer of middle school age students and will add primary school children whose houses were destroyed by Hurricane Stan this year bringing the total to around 34 students. A Tzutuhuil speaking community, indigenous students from Santiago Atitlán are often subjected to discrimantion and racism. Fotokids wants to develop a design studio run by the students serving other non-profits around the lake.
Contributions for updated computers and more digital point and shoots to the Santiago project can be made in the How to Help section of the Fotokids' website through our secure payment system, PayPal.
