Fotokids began selling beaded bracelets made by our students in Santiago after one of them informed us that she wouldn't be able to continue with the photography classes as she had to work. We discovered she would be working in a factory to make the beaded bracelets that are so popular among tourists, and that her work would be sold to a middle-man who would retain most of the proceeds of the final sale. We decided to set up a small cooperative among our Santiago students: ten percent of the proceeds from bracelet sales go to the students' scholarship fund, and the rest is distributed among their families. They receive all the benefits of their work, and by coordinating sales we are able to contribute in a direct way to their financial well-being.
